Dizzy Heights

Our Christmas gift from one sister-in-law each year is a new Amaryllis….

…and this year was no exception.

Now I’m not sure if it’s my ‘advancing’ years…

…my shrinking bones….

…or something in the soil these beauties are supplied with….

…but this year my view out of the kitchen window has been thru’ a 2 stemmed monster.

But with the aid of Mr TG’s rather long ladder…

…and a safety net, I can reveal…

not one….

but 2 flower heads.

Sheesh…the air’s thin up here…
…better climb down before I fall.

Lovely :-)
I love Amaryllis, and I think the height has something to do with light conditions. If you have too many dull days and not enough bright light, the plant will stretch further before starting to flower, hence a taller plant.
Not sure if that's correct but so I've heard :-)

What a wonderful gift! And what beautiful blooms! How fun to get twice as much beauty in one pot!

Just amazing to see the blooms, Mine only did one at a time.. Also I didn't plant it in soil, I put it in a jar with pebbles with water and it doesn't smell very pretty! LOL,,,,

Now you might slap my hand when I tell you this, but I have a plant sort of like this, and I dug it up as the the new fence took preferance to plants, but carefully place it in a bucket of water intending to plant else where.........and it is still in the bucket of water, has been since before Christmas, well, since October really...but doing nicely and if I do get round to planting it out, is has multiplied and I have about 6 plants now...the flowers are smaller, and are pale orange and yellow in colour, about 6 flowers make up one head,so to speak..This is a pretty flower with two heads..lol..and tall!!

I've heard that you can shorten paperwhites and other forced bulbs with a little vodka or other such alcohol in the water so they won't fall over. Maybe that amaryllis just wants a stiff drink?
