Better Late Than Never

Now I know you’ve all got these in your gardens…the perennial cornflower (Centaurea)…but sometimes ‘common’ blooms just pass you by, then you stop, look closer & wonder why the heck you’ve not got your mitts on these before.
I worked in a garden recently that had a carpet of these blue beauties that quite simply took my breath away.
So I got 1 or 2 to start my own swathe and then I bought this…..

5.7.2013 (13)

….Centaurea ‘Purple Heart’.
What can I say…it’s simply stunning. It starts off with white petals that turn to a mid-pink as it ages.

Now I’m hooked and bought this…Centaurea ‘Black Sprite’ too.
Bees love em’…so all good!

Love the black one Jane - most unusual - the ones I have are the normal purpley-blue they usually get mildew at some stage but not this year for some reason.

Ooh so pretty, makes me wish we had a garden rather than my little courtyard with lots of pots. Love Alison xx

I had loads of the blue ones, in fact they started to take over. Despite it all you've got me tempted with the black one.

I'm not so posh as you, so I only have the common or garden blue one. The other two are very lovely. I do find though that they need to be in poor soil otherwise they are terrible floppers! D

I don't have any perennial cornflowers, Jane. Probably they're not so common here. I love the flower form, though, and that Purple heart one is irresistible.

I love these but never had enough moisture for them. Maybe I can find a spot in my rain garden...
